Music performance and general educator has greater responsibility to develop their students in the higher level of techniques and the adequate interpretation of a wide variety of music repertoires. My teaching philosophy helps students promote their improvement through multiple angles, including the historical understandings and the theoretical structures of their study repertoires.
As an educator who requires establishing the musical path for each student, I realized that one of the essential parts in teaching is understanding the student’s individuality, cultural diversity, and personality. Everyone possesses their unique experiences of their lives to have numerously various perspectives to interpret the repertoires and attitudes to express their ideas on performing. Accepting this uniqueness and encouraging them for a more profound devotion toward music is the ideal first step of teaching. We discuss how a specific part or entire piece can be translated more effectively in historical, performance practical, or theoretical, but personal. This process lets students lend the joyous musical experience through wholly communicating with music.
When planning a competition or recital, I am far more likely to pay attention to every practice session. I believe students are not as different as I do. The students are more actively participate, practice, and thus learn if they have a goal. Undoubtedly, part of the challenge of teaching is to let students properly motivated by giving suitable targets. However, this is one of the essential components as a teacher, and the teacher can do by providing opportunities to students to show their achievement. Having a small recital at the end of the semester or the weekly performance class are great examples that I have had with preparing music competitions or auditions for students.
Besides, pianists always consider the technical difficulties physically; for example, playing scales, chords, or arpeggios in faster tempo is one of the challenges in performing. When the students face these technical problems, my approach understands our physical movement to the piano. In addition to the practical technique, making musical lines, interpretation based on composer’s historical and personal background, performance practice has greater importance for my teaching with actual demonstration, direction to their inner personal exploration, and storytelling. With the understanding of the mechanical reaction of our body, the students make improvements effectively pianistic colorful explosion.
As a fluent musician in the musical language, I am devotedly pleased to teach this beautiful language. What I believe is music has incredible power to communicate with people in the world; at the same time, music is one of the most useful words to carry out all senses and feelings of people.
